Loft insulation
Around a quarter of a home's heat escapes through an uninsulated roof. Current guidance is 270mm at loft floor level and most North East lofts have less than half of that. Typical starting prices are from £395 for a top-up and from £695 for a full installation, with the final price confirmed in a written quotation after we have assessed the loft.

ECO4 and the Warm Homes Local Grant will not fund loft insulation where there is already more than 100mm in place. That rules out most homes insulated under earlier schemes, even though 100mm laid twenty years ago has usually compressed well below that. If you have been told you do not qualify, this is usually why.

Survey of your home
Both loft insulation and solar need a survey. For loft insulation we measure the loft, check existing depth, access and ventilation. For solar and battery we check roof size, pitch, orientation, shading and your consumer unit. If you are doing both, one visit covers them together.
Written quotation
We review the requirement and issue a written quotation, with the insulation specification or the system design. No obligation, and no work begins until you accept it.
Installation and paperwork
Insulation is fitted to the 270mm standard with the work documented. Solar and battery is installed by your appropriately certified installer partner, who issues the MCS certificate you need for Smart Export Guarantee payments.
Who you will be dealing with
I have spent close to 20 years in the energy industry, almost all of it in energy and renewables. Ten of those years were at EDF Energy, working on regulated retail energy and government energy efficiency obligations, followed by Northern Powergrid, the network operator that handles every electricity connection across the North East, where I worked on connections, charging and low carbon technology activity alongside engineers and network designers. During Covid I moved into the NHS for a year, supporting finance teams at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, then returned to renewables as Finance Manager for an ECO4 retrofit and renewables business, taking it through growth from around £200k to £4m turnover in under 12 months.
My background is finance, systems and governance, so I understand funding, grants, grid connections, evidence and paperwork. I am not an installer and I will not pretend to be. The work is done by appropriately certified installers whose qualifications I check before I work with them. What I do is make sure you get a proper survey, a clear written quotation and paperwork that is actually right.

0% VAT until March 2027
Insulation, solar and battery storage all count as energy saving materials, so they currently qualify for 0% VAT. This applies until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is expected to rise to 5%.

The main factors are the loft area, the depth of any existing insulation, access, and whether boarding needs lifting. Insulation currently qualifies for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Usually yes. Insulation reduces the heat you lose, solar generates electricity, and there is little point powering heat that escapes through the roof. Insulation is also cheaper per unit of benefit. If you are considering both, we assess them together on one visit.

In most cases no. Roof mounted solar on a domestic property in England is normally permitted development, provided the panels do not protrude more than 200mm from the roof plane and do not sit above the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may need consent. We check this at survey.
A north facing roof generates considerably less and is rarely worth it on its own. East and west facing roofs work well, and an east west split array can spread generation across the day. Shading from chimneys, dormers or trees can often be managed with optimisers or microinverters. We assess orientation and shading at survey and tell you honestly if it does not stack up.
The Smart Export Guarantee requires larger licensed electricity suppliers to offer a tariff that pays you for electricity you export to the grid. To register you need an MCS certificate for the installation and normally a smart meter. Your installer partner issues the MCS certificate, and you apply to a supplier of your choice.
